This was the biggest dance battle I’ve ever seen and it was amazing. Hundreds of kids crowded into Uptown’s Alternatives, a multi-use children’s youth center that teaches, among other things, circus arts and footworking, and looks like the Foot Clan headquarters in the first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and it was incredible. I’ve seen a lot of great breakdancingover the years, but I’ve never seen so many different styles together in the same place to the point that, before now, I didn’t realize how many distinct styles there were. I’m not talking about the difference between death metal and black metal here, it was easy to see how one style differed from another, just by observing with my (uncultured, untrained) naked eye.

The energy was incredible. Even as a circle of hundreds of people gathered around the mail event, there were never less than three cyphers going on at any given time, elsewhere in the packed room. As soon as 3 or 4 square feet of floorspace opened up, someone was spinning upside down on it. As an added bonus, a lot of the teams came in costumes, which gave the event the look of The Warriors: The Musical. This was the fourth year of the event, and I definitely recommend you booking your calendars for Hellaween V.
