We in the Midwest: Hey Champ’s new mixtape
Posted on January 8th, 2010 by eric
A few weeks back, Hey Champ released Winner’s Circle, a free mixtape of tracks that they’ve worked on over the past year, including a collaboration with the Cool Kids, remixes they’ve done for Mike Posner, Passion Pit, Moneypenny, 80 Kidz and more, and a couple remixes of their own track (Raw Man handles “Neverest” and out of several dozen remixes of “Cold Dust Girl”, Only Children’s version gets the winning slot on the mix).
There’s a definite overriding sound on all the tracks. Led by the keyboard, Hey Champ brings an unironic take on the same type of 80s pop that has become the cornerstone of every Chromeo song. There’s a bit of Hall & Oates and Ray Parker and Phil Collins, but whereas a lot of those guys were doing a lot of post-rocknroll/post-disco take on 60s soul, Hey Champ is kind of doing a post-hiphop/post-electro take on them.
Feel free to hang around for a while and stream the whole album here, but make sure to follow the link and download a copy for yourself
