Dance in the New Year at Lincoln Hall
Posted on January 2nd, 2010 by admin
For years, the city (and to be fair, every American city) has been trying to clamp down on raves and underground venues in the name of safety, and as much as I hate the practice, it’s true. There’s a lot of shitty construction getting rented out in the city, and it doesn’t necessarily take a rager to make a fire escape-turned-balcony collaspse, and if a level of illegality is necessary for a party to happen (at, say, an unlicensed warehouse space), there’ll probably be some degree of subsequent illegalities allowed or ignored. Unfortunately, the government is dumb so, just like in the War on Drugs, the city tries to cut down on the supply, assuming that the demand will just go away.
People like drugs and people like danger, and most reasonable people don’t like waiting til the arbitrary age of 21 to start drinking, but you know what? While a lot of those things happen at parties, most parties do not exist to facilitate that. Most parties are a place where people can talk and dance and meet people, and if you provide them with a space to do those things legally, people will come.
It’s hard to believe that it took so long for the Metro to realize that they could make bank by doing the same thing for dance party heads that they’ve been doing for the goth set for years with Nocturna. Even better places like Lincoln Hall are joining suit. Lincoln Hall is a brand new space from the people behind Schubas and, having just seen it for the first time, I’m a big fan. The space used to hold the Three Penny Cinema, and it’s just a lovely room, with excellent sound and lights, a big stage, and a nice balcony/lounge overlooking at all. From the outside, the place looks like just another Lincoln Park bar/restaurant, and you would never suspect how big it is past the first room.
Everyone was worried after the first hour, when only a handful of people took advantage of the reduced, $1 admission. It was New Year’s Day and a good 90% of the city was exhausted, but the place wa packed by 11. Masks were donned, and the place filled up for a bill of entirely local acts.
Good sign of things to come in MMX.
