As The Fly Honey Show is one of our favorite events of the year and benefits our genius friends The Inconvenience, we were overjoyed to be back for another year. I’ve described the Fly Honey show as a variety show masquerading as burlesque, because, while there’s no shortage of titillation and sexuality, it’s really a showcase of all sorts of talent with “boobs and butts and maybe some dicks” as a bit of a hook. There’s a lot of music, with an emphasis on the funky and the soulful, but also stand-up, monologues, poetry, some classic Vaudeville, some really heady dance that I will hesitantly call “avant garde”, as well as a big 20+ homie-and-honey showstopper set to Hey Big Spender. Amongst my favorites was a nearly-naked preacher with a devilish handlebar mustache in a tuxedo Speedo giving a fire-and-brimstone Pentecostal reading of Nina Hartley’s guide to submission and a gender-bent take on the Groucho Marx classic Lydia the Tattooed Lady.
