Rehab with Mixhell

Yes We CrÃu!
I used to date this woman who worked with this crazy first year college student from Brazil, who she always brought over to smoke pot (which wasn’t my jam). This girl was a stunner, this overly confident girl with long dark hair and thick eyebrows and a million curves, who would go on at length about how she missed Brazil, and the weeklong, topless raves she would go to in the jungle. For all I know, she was full of shit (what seventeen year old isn’t?) but I had no reason to question her.
I love the shit out of Brazil, I love the shit out of Brazilian people, and I love the shit out of Brazilian music. And I’m talking about every era of Brazilian music. Give me some bossa nova, some tropicalia, some baile funk. I love it all. If you’re into punk rock or post punk or no wave at all, than you’ve got to check out the way the Brazilians do it. I can recommend two comps, The Sexual Life of Savages and Nao Wave, and As Mercenarias, a group that appears on both.
Despite all this, I don’t know shit about Brazilian metal. I know Sepultera, who I almost saw at one of my first concerts in high school, until they were replaced at the last minute by Type O Negative. If Sepultera is indicative of what Brazilian metal sounds/sounded like, than I should love it. Angry thrash music with traditional drum signatures. I don’t listen to much metal though, these days, as most of my time is caught up in dance parties. I was really excited to find out that Mixhell was going to play Rehab’s blog launch and mixtape release party.
Mixhell is a dj duo made up of Sepultera’s drummer, Iggor Cavalera, and his wife, Laima Leyton. Their songs and mixes I’ve heard from them incorporate elements of baile funk, metal, electro, and bmore. For their live set, Iggor parked a drum set in front of the dj booth, which he would then hop over back and forth to augment the song they were playing with live percussion. It was a casualer crowd than usual (I think a lot of cats were partied out after a solid week of Halloween parties), but everyone who was there danced extra hard and had their ass rocked by Mixhell.
Team Bayside High opened up the night. Skyler did a live mix of songs from the new mixtape. Fly By Night’s Willy Joy and Greg Corner (from Dark Wave Disco and Kill Hannah) rounded out the night.
