Resonate

I’ve always thought that hippies and ravers got a bad rap. Say what you will about (some of) their musical and fashion choices, but both cultures have brought about revolutions in the way people perform and enjoy music, and both are really dedicated to a lot of unselfconscious, outrageous fun. That fun gets heavily amped up with the mutant offspring culture that comes out of Burning Man. .
Burner raves are a shit ton of fun. The 4th edition of Chicago’s annual Resonate party was awesome, and was dedicated to bringing enjoyment to each of the five senses. There was a chill room and a hookah lounge, multiple dance floors, a papier mache rocket ship, and a glowing enchanted forest where stuffed animals gave you treats (some of which were physical, like Hershey’s kisses; some of which were experiential, like a fuzzy tarantula that invited you to wear it as a hat). There were people doling out massages and body paint, Cirque Du Soleil-style acrobatics, burlesque, bands and DJs.
There are a lot of ins to the community, but if you just want the shorthand version, follow our friends Environmental Encroachment, a punk rock marching band that has been informing me about cool shit for about ten years now: Fulton Market raves, Logan Square loft parties, dance parties in abandoned mansions in Hyde Park, backyard pig roasts in Pilsen, experimental theater and puppet shows on the northwest side, and more.
