We Come in Peace: The Silver Room Block Party

Posted on July 26th, 2010 by admin

The Silver Room’s annual block party is a place where New Wicker Park meets Old Wicker Park (meets older Wicker Park, which was a lot more rough-and-tumble, and a lot more blue collar than the kinda-yuppie, kinda-bohemian neighborhood I set up my first apartment in, back in 2001).

There were stations for boutiques and stations for little Mom-and-Pop operations, live murals and live graf, a lot of bikes, a lot of dogs, a lot of kids, a lot of day drunks (from the alright, I can walk around with a tall boy in a paper bag! variety to the passing-out-in-on-the-pavement type), and the music ranged from Team Bayside High’s hipster electro to DJ AMPM’s classic hip hop, to the spoken word/backpacker rap style of FM Supreme, to the loud, melodic punk of high on fire, to My Big Fat Indian Wedding, which recreates live a raucous Indian wedding full of percussionists, deejays, and a procession where a tricycle pedicab led the pretend bride and groom on a dance party processional down Milwaukee Avenue.

But there wasn’t a bouncy moon castle. Something went wrong and there wasn’t a bouncy moon castle. Sigh. You can’t have everything, I guess.
